About Us

 What is Responsible CareĀ®?

Responsible Care® is a voluntary set of initiatives within the global chemical industry to safely handle products from inception in the research laboratory, through manufacturing and distribution, to ultimate disposal, and to involve the public in our decision-making processes. Its strict mandate goes above and beyond what is legally required.

Created in Canada in 1987 by the Canadian Chemical Producers' Association (CCPA), Responsible Care® has quickly spread to 45 countries.

Responsible Care comprises guiding principles and codes of practice relating to:
  • Community awareness and emergency response
  • Research and development
  • Manufacturing
  • Transportation
  • Distribution
  • Hazardous waste management

These codes of practice define what is expected of a member company, including criteria for evaluating progress. The codes are supported by implementation manuals, seminars and workshops. They also affect with whom we do business: suppliers, customers, distributors, transporters, and waste management contractors.

H.L. Blachford Ltd. is successfully verified under the Canadian Chemical Producers' Association's Responsible Care re-verification (phase III) protocol. Blachford Corp. in Frankfort, IL is also Responsible Care® certified.

Re-verification is required every three years. Re-verification focuses on the actions taken by the company compared to the findings from previous verifications and confirms that the company has continued to improve its processes, community outreach communications and management systems.
