About Us

 Blachford History

Our founder, Henry Lloyd Blachford, opened his business in Montreal in 1921 as a sales agency for chemicals used in the rubber, paint and ink industries. Products sold included carbon blacks for rubber, pigments, dyestuffs and drying rolls.

In 1936 H.L. Blachford began manufacturing. The first products were aluminum stearate and zinc stearate. (We were the first in Canada to manufacture metallic soaps). The original manufacturing facilities were located in the St. James Street area of Montreal, but in 1937 a move was made to the present building on Lucien-L'Allier.

A sales office was established in Toronto in the early 1950's, and manufacturing facilities in 1957. In 1974, a large new plant with offices and a laboratory was constructed in Mississauga. This facility was expanded in 1984.

Most of our products used in the production and forming of steel sheet are made in our Mississauga plant. These are chiefly lubricants, corrosion inhibitors and hydraulic oils, which the Company has manufactured since the late 1940's.

In 1960, Blachford became active in the United States under the name H.L. Blachford Inc., and began manufacturing and marketing noise control materials. In 1965, a plant and office were built in Troy, Michigan and later plants were established in Corona, California and in West Chicago, Illinois. In 1989 H.L. Blachford Inc. was sold to German interests who, in turn, sold it to the American firm Masland Industries.

Blachford Inc. was created in March of 1995 when Masland sold to H.L. Blachford Ltd. the west Chicago plant along with the equipment in it and other assets used to make products for the non-passenger car market.

In Canada, H.L. Blachford Ltd. has been manufacturing noise control products in addition to many other products in its two plants since approximately 1960.

Blachford Corporation was founded in 1989. Its offices and plant are in Frankfort, Illinois where it manufactures a wide range of lubricants that are used by manufacturers of wire. Such products had been manufactured in our Ontario plant since 1960.

In 2002, Blachford RP Corporation was founded. Initially, the products, mainly rubber mats, were made in a rented plant in Crossville, TN. In the summer of 2002 all the necessary equipment was moved to a new manufacturing plant in Kings Mountain, NC. Most of the floor-covering systems made by this Company are designed for comfort and to reduce noise.

The Blachford Acoustics Laboratory, completed in 2003 and located next to Blachford Inc.'s plant in West Chicago, brings advanced testing capabilities to our acoustical and rubber companies. It features a large hemi-anechoic room suitable for large vehicles such as heavy trucks and buses, a dynamometer and a reverberation room. It is a unique resource, historically available to only passenger car OEMs, and is intended to help customers determine and achieve sound quality goals.
